Export Development Canada Electronic Marketplace Initiative: A Supply Chain Management Perspective

Kayvan Lavassani, Bahar Movahedi

Organizational information platforms have evolved significantly during the past few decades. Companies have experienced the advantages and capabilities of EDI systems since the 1960s. Since the 1990s the ERP systems became the dominant information platforms for managing internal supply chain of organizations. By the late 1990s the attention of practitioners and academics was shifted from managing internal supply chain to external supply chain management. Since the early 21st century the web-based applications have become an integral part the organizational supply chain.
Electronic Marketplaces (EM) are one of these web-based information platforms that promise considerable potentials for local and global supply chain of organizations. Export Development Canada (EDC) with co-operation with agencies from Ireland, Norway, Spain and The Netherlands founded the ‘eMarket Services’ to facilitate the collaboration among the local as well as international supplies and customers. The presentation will include the ways in which organizational across the world can utilize ‘eMarket Services’ as a medium within their local and global supply change management. Moreover, some future initiatives regarding EMs by EDC will be described in this session.
