Thinking Green Across the Supply Chain: Exel and DPWN's Commitment to Sustainability

Patricia Au, Senior Solutions Engineer, Solutions Group, DHL Exel Supply Chain; patricia.au@exel.com
Adrian Kumar, VP Retail Solutions, Solutions Group, DHL Exel Supply Chain

Introduction
As companies are quickly developing their green supply chain strategies, DHL Exel Supply Chain and parent company Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN) are at the forefront in a global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  In this presentation you will learn about the initiatives taking place at the world’s leading Logistics Company in a commitment to minimize our impact on the environment.

Our GoGreen climate protection program aims to reduce our CO2 emissions by 30% through 2020, and 10% through 2012.  In addition to internal initiatives, we are working with customers and suppliers through a series of programs, pilots and feasibility studies to accomplish this goal.

This session will touch on three key components of the supply chain network which offer opportunities for positive environmental action: warehousing, transportation and cultural change.  Our initiatives, which range from energy efficient warehouses to carbon-neutral shipment options, are paving the way for sustainability in a rapidly growing industry.  We will also discuss general industry best practices implemented by Exel and others.

Governmental regulatory frameworks to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions are currently being developed and/or implemented in many countries around the globe. As a consequence, companies are facing new realities, and need to consider the different existent options and mechanisms to meet their legal obligations under the proposed regulation.

This paper introduces a mathematical model and a solution methodology for the "Carbon-Market Sensitive Green Supply Chain Network Design" (CMS/GSCND) problem. Specifically, carbon trading considerations are integrated within the supply chain network design phase and the problem formulated as multi-objective mixed integer linear optimization program to decide on the supply chain configuration. The solution methodology allows the evaluation of different strategic decisions (options) such as supplier and subcontractor selection, product allocation, capacity utilization, transportation configuration, and their impact in terms of carbon footprint. This new formulation provides decision makers with the ability to understand the trade-offs between total logistics costs and the impact of GHGs reduction. It also allows offsetting the latter through both supply chain reengineering and carbon trading. Model validation and extended analysis are demonstrated via a numerical study.

Green Logistics: How Green is Your Supply Chain

Cem Dogan, Partner, Accenture

Accenture's hands-on experience in the marketplace supporting Sustainable Supply Chain initiatives, including Green Logistics, has provided us with a comprehensive view of the trends, drivers, and future direction of the modern supply chain. We have seen a paradigm shift taking place with green awareness moving rapidly up the corporate, consumer, and legislative agenda.

This presentation will focus on:

  • The Financial Case for Sustainability

  • The Role of the Supply Chain in Green Logistics

  • The Case for Supporting Sustainable Supply Chain Initiatives

  • Innovation in Sustainability and Green Logistics

  • The Response and Results of the Early Movers

  • A View of the Future

Using case studies, the presentation also gives attendees a detailed assessment of the capabilities that companies have implemented around integrating green concepts into their supply chain model that will deliver a lasting competitive edge.
